Patty's personal take on it follows in four points
Point One: Physicality – the whole body is engaged when we sing Preparing to sing – “Body Breath Voice” - a very simple starting place Body First, stretching muscles and releasing any tension Breath Then breathing with a softened tummy, allowing the breath to come all the way down. SPLAT - Singers Please Loosen Abdominal Tension (coined by Frankie’s friend Janice Chapman) Voice Finally releasing the breath with a gentle sound, holding for as long as comfortable. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Point Two: Accessibility – everybody can sing The instinct to sing is innate in everyone and we wish to free people from the notion that it is only for the trained and the talented. Our sessions are inclusive of everyone, regardless of musical training and experience. The Natural Voice approach is to teach without jargon and in an interactive way so that everyone can participate equally from the start. All are welcome, all ages, people from different walks of life and cultural backgrounds, people with disabilities, everyone is equal in a Natural Voice workshop. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Point Three: Freedom and release – an informal way to sing Singing is not a competition but a unique way for us to be together and connected through the sounds we make. There is no judgement, participants are free to contribute in their own way, even if only by listening. The emphasis is on providing opportunities to free the voice, to let go, to express, to connect to others in a supportive musical environment. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Point Four: Diversity in material and activities, new shared experiences We will use songs from different cultures and playful improvisation activities to develop voice quality and vocal strength. Over time we will develop spontaneity and build friendships with the group. Other expected side effects are better memory, improved physical well-being, and development of confidence. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
